Fairbanks Retired Teachers' Association

Don DeWitt Scholarship

managed by Alaska Community Foundation

In 1962 Don DeWitt came to Fairbanks and began teaching math at Lathrop High School and then to West Valley High School for a total of 28 years, retiring in 1990. Don was proud of the opportunity to help along over 4,000 students (some of whom went on to become teachers and professors and other professionals) during his teaching career.

When Don returned to Alaska in 2008, he established annual scholarships through FRTA. Don provided two $2500 scholarships for Fairbanks North Star Borough School District students that are ranked below the 90 percentile and attended at least two years of high school in the district.

At his passing in 2017, his entire estate went toward Scholarships for High School Seniors and is managed by the Alaska Community Foundation. We are hoping that The Don DeWitt Scholarship Application will begin in Nov. 2023 and end March 15, 2024. https://alaskacf.org/funds/don-dewitt-scholarship-fund/

Don DeWitt wanted to help seniors whose class standing (rank) was below the 90 percentile after their first semester of their senior year, which his Scholarship still recognizes. If you know of high school seniors who fall into this requirement PLEASE let them know about Don's scholarship.
